Constellation:- Understanding ArgumentPosted: January 2, 2015
An argument is an attempt to persuade. When having an argument you must take into account a set of claims and a conclusion. All arguments have a structure. A claim is a statement or proposition that could either be true or false. A conclusion is a type of claim, where you direct your main point.
To be persuasive in an argument, you must have evidence. Evidence is again, another claim. This is what creates the difference between argument and opinion. When giving a good argument you must have a set of claims that gives the reader good reasons to believe the conclusion. Here the claims mustn’t be untrue and the conclusion must follow from the claims.
