Project 5:- Story Animation

To finish the topic of story telling and format, the last project we had to do was to create an animation, again using the same story as the hand made book and digital book. The point of us creating a story using all these formats is to see how a story can change depending on the format we use. Throughout the week we researched storyboards and looked at how we could create an animation using illustrator and sketches.

I will be reporting back on the progress of this project, hopefully to end up producing a well flowing animation that can tell the story of the Jersey Boys.

Project 4:- Ebook/IPDF Story

After the hand made book, we stayed on the topic of story telling and format, where we went onto making a digital book. Our focus was to produce the same story as the hand made book but adding in navigations. Here we added in a contents page so when you click on one of the chapters it would take you to that page. We also had to create navigation arrows on each page which you could click for the next page, previous page as well as the first and last page.

Although we were supposed to concentrate primarily on the technical aspect of the book, I still feel the layout was quite well done, using the same photos from the hand made book, just putting in more depth into the story line. I’m also happy with my understanding of how to create these navigations as well as the paragraph and character styles we had to adjust in order to show the difference between chapters, headings, and the body of the text.

Project 3:- Book Making

After telling a story about ourselves, we then went onto looking at how we would create a hand made book, telling an already told story. We were asked to choose one of our favourite stories and then condense it down into a short story book. I chose the story of the Jersey Boys which is a recently released film about how Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons came to fame.

After sketching out a brief overview of what was going to happen in the book, where it is a story of how 4 boys went from ‘Rags to Riches’, I started to come up with ideas of how to create the book. In the end I came up with quite a clever idea of making the book look like a stage having curtains that would open the book. This would then also link in with the story as it is also a musical theater story.

As a whole I’m quite happy with what I produced. What I think would have made my book better though, is if I used better materials. For example for the curtains, it might have been better if I used a silk sheet instead of paper as this would have looked more like curtains with a wavy effect. Apart from this I feel I conducted the story line well, where you are able to understand what is going on even though how much it has been cut down to make a short story.

Story Telling Exercise

With typography put to one side, the next topic we went onto was story telling. The first task we were given was to sketch out and tell a story about ourselves. Just like my 6 word story I had to do for the hybrid font, I told the story of my fear of commitment. I wanted to keep it short but sweet, showing how the relationships of my family have made an impact on the way I think about my relationships. I think this worked out well as I have used icons that represent the story I am telling as well as thinking bubbles to show whats going on in my mind.
